Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)
What is OMT
Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy that only Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O) are licensed to provide. It is a type of manual medicine that attempts to gain better function of the body. Various techniques can be used depending on both the person and the problem presenting to the physician.

Potentially anyone
Who should be referred for OMT
The following is a list of suggested diagnoses that could incorporate OMT in outpatient management:
1. Chronic asthma
2. Constipation
3. GER and feeding difficulties
4. Chronic sinusitis
5. Pneumonia
6. Chronic or acute otitis media (serous or suppurative)
7. Torticollis
8. Headaches - both tension and migraine
9. Enuresis
10. Scoliosis
11. Neck pain - acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain
12. Back pain- acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain
13. Gait abnormalities
14. Cerebral palsy
15. Irritable bowel syndrome
16. Fibromyalgia
17. Plagiocephaly or crooked heads
18. Sprains and strains
Is there an age that is appropriate to refer for OMT
Any age is appropriate for OMT including newborns, infants, toddlers, teens and adults.
What should patients bring to the visit
Quiet toys, books, pacifiers, bottles, stuffed animals and soft blankets are helpful to bring.
It is usually most helpful to have only one other person in the room with the patient and the doctor to avoid distractions to the patient.
What can parents expect of the visit
Most appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes at a time
There may be soft music playing in the background
The patient will usually have to be laying on an exam table for the OMT
A parent may stay in the room to play with an infant during most OMT
OMT is not painful, but sometimes infants or children may cry if they do not like to be laying down
Sometimes follow-up visits are required
Parents or patients may be given homework such as stretching exercises
